Picture yourself five years from now if you are pre-diabetic or have type 2 diabetes and are not caring for yourself. If you are telling yourself any of the following excuses, you would rather suffer the consequences of this disease rather than change your food selection and physical activities! These are a few of the statements made to me by some diabetic patients I have nursed: It’s easier to take a drug because:

eating properly won’t make much of a difference
eating properly takes too long to get results
their blood glucose levels are lower
they don’t need to stop eating their favourite foods
eating healthy foods is boring, too expensive, too time consuming
they don’t have time to change their lifestyle
they only need to change one or two of their food choices
they believe healthy foods don’t taste as good as convenience and fast foods

The lifestyle option is far better than the drug option.

Insulin is not a substitute for healthy eating, physical activity and weight loss in type 2 diabetes.  Inappropriate use of insulin produces weight gain and continuing poor control of type 2 diabetes. Stop and ask yourself this question: do you think any of these people lost weight, reduced their waist measurement and lost fat from around their internal organs? So they were still at higher risk than those without type 2 diabetes with:
high blood pressure
high triglyceride levels
low HDL (good) cholesterol levels
heart disease
neuropathy

Fast food and convenient food is more expensive than healthy food and, when consumed daily, does not help with weight loss.  This in turn leads to higher cost for more visits to your health care provider and costs for drugs to reduce blood pressure, and/or cholesterol.   And those visits take time too! Type 2 diabetes can be healed, not cured, healed. Healing is something a health care provider cannot do for you.  Healing can only come from within you. Having type 2 diabetes does not mean you need to die before your family or friends who do not have this condition. It is is not a death sentence.

Type 2 diabetes is more than just controlling blood glucose levels.
